On a personal level, good for him. On the other hand, there is such a thing as responsibility; and the prince is avoiding it. *Somebody* will have to rule the kingdom after his parents die. The prince is in a position where he could make a difference, and he chooses to walk away because it makes him uncomfortable.
That seems like a wise decision.
